Every week, travellers send us the same questions on WhatsApp: Do I need to book early? Can I come alone? Which class time is best? Instead of guessing, we looked at our own numbers.
We analysed 1,382 bookings and 2,811 guests who booked a samba class, night tour, street party or Forró night on our website between August 2021 and October 2026. Here’s what we found.
The key numbers
- 60% of guests book on the same day or the day before.
- 1 in 3 bookings is a solo traveller.
- 52% of bookings are for two people.
- 55% of Copacabana class guests choose the 7pm class.
- February is our busiest month, about 2× busier than September.
- Wednesday is the most popular night for the Samba Night Tour.
- Only 2% of bookings were cancelled.
- Guests come from 33 countries, led by the US, France and the UK.
1. Most people book samba at the last minute
Rio trips change fast: the weather, a beach day that runs long, a friend’s tip. That’s why 31% of our guests book on the same day and another 29% the day before. The median is just one day ahead.
What it means for you: you can usually decide on the day. But groups of 4 or more, and anyone travelling during Carnival, should book a few days early to get the time they want.
2. One in three guests comes alone
34% of all bookings are for one person. For our Forró night, more than half of the guests come on their own.
Samba no pé is a solo dance, so you never need a partner, and group classes are a natural way to meet other travellers. On the Samba Night Tour, you arrive with a group and leave with new friends.
3. Most bookings are for two
52% of bookings are for two people: couples, friends and travel buddies. Only 3% are groups of five or more. If you’re a bigger group, message us on WhatsApp so we can keep you together in the same class.
4. The 7pm class is the favourite
In Copacabana, 55% of guests choose the 7pm class, more than any other time. 3pm comes second (17%). Seven o’clock fits after a beach day, and it’s the class that connects to the night tour.
Tip: if you want a quieter class with more space, try 3pm on weekdays.
5. February is the busiest month
Over five years, Carnival makes February about 2× busier than September, our quietest month. March and July (European summer holidays) are the next busiest. Planning a Carnival trip? Book early, and see our Rio Carnival guide.
6. Wednesday is the top night for the night tour
The Samba Night Tour runs Wednesday to Saturday at 7pm. Wednesday is the most popular night, followed very closely by Friday. If you want the most energy, pick Wednesday or Friday; if you prefer a smaller group, try Thursday.
7. The Monday Street Party is planned ahead
Most experiences are booked a day ahead, but the Monday Samba Street Party is planned further ahead: only 43% of guests book it on the same day or the day before, compared with 71% for the Copacabana class. Monday nights at Pedra do Sal are a famous Rio tradition, and travellers plan their week around it.
8. Almost nobody cancels
Only 2% of bookings were cancelled in five years. Once people decide to dance samba in Rio, they keep the plan.
9. Guests come from 33 countries
Our website bookings don’t record country, but our GetYourGuide bookings do. Between August and December 2026, 497 travellers from 33 countries booked with us there. Americans (22%), French (17%) and British (17%) together make up more than half, followed by Germany and Italy.
Most guests (89%) chose a class in English, and 9% in Spanish. Our instructors teach in English, Spanish and Portuguese, so you can relax and focus on the dancing.
The GetYourGuide numbers also confirm the patterns above: 34% of bookings are solo, 57% are made on the same day or the day before, and 7pm is the most popular class time there too.
How we got these numbers
We used every booking made through our own website (riosambadancer.com) for activities between 2 August 2021 and 31 October 2026: 1,382 bookings and 2,811 guests. Cancelled bookings were removed. Monthly averages use 2022 to 2026 (2021 is left out because our data starts in August that year). The country and language figures (section 9) come from a separate set: our GetYourGuide bookings for activities between August and December 2026 (237 bookings, 497 travellers). No names or personal details were used.
